Junior Infants have been very busy in Term 2 learning all about Tom Crean and his adventures, toys, the weather, transport, spring, the farm and food. We enjoyed exploring these themes through Aistear. We opened a toy shop, vets corner and restaurant in our role play areas. We explored these themes through various activities such as Lego, Playdough, cutting and sticking, drawing and writing.
In S.E.S.E we investigated what materials float and sink. We designed boats for Tom Crean using different materials to help him on his adventures. We learned about toys and transport in the past. We practised our mapping skills and drew our playground and designed a farm. We explored magnets and investigated what materials are magnetic and non-magnetic. We went on a sensory walk and discussed the signs of spring. The children learned about different types of materials, described their textures and decided on what materials were best to design a house for the Three Little Pigs.
During Term 2 we celebrated Seachtain na Gaeilge. The children participated in an art competition, we learned the ‘Haka Gaelach’ and a new dance called ‘An Dreolín’. We performed these in the hall during our céilí. We sang our favourite Irish songs and learned a new poem. We got to see Toy Story 1.5 performed by 5th class and watched the ‘Seo Faisúin’ by 6th.
The children in Junior Infants were busy this term creating beautiful pieces of art also. We designed boats for Tom Crean, pinch pots using clay for Easter and printed a farm scene using different types of tools and materials.
In P.E we focused on the strands gymnastics and athletics. We also had a block of Gaelic football with Alan. Coaches from St. Joesphs came to visit us and gave us an introduction to soccer. For the month of April we have been busy practising our skipping skills and we are partaking in the ‘Skip Around Europe’ challenge.
Junior Infants have been working so hard since starting in Junior Infants. In September, the children were learning all about the doctor’s surgery. The children had great fun in the Role Play area checking temperatures with the thermometer and treating patients with bandages and medicine.
In October, we learned all about Halloween. We learned about Halloween traditions and made potions in the Role Play Area. We also became meteorologists, recording the weather everyday and discussing how we can prepare for each type of weather.
November was full of fun as we blasted off to space. We learned about Neil Armstrong and the solar system. We learned about gravity during science week.
The stars of Junior Infants shone brightly as they performed “The TipToe Nativity” for the school and their parents. There were lots of rehearsals involved but Junior Infants put on an amazing show and did themselves proud. Even with all that hard work, the children still managed to relax by the fire and listen to 4th Class reading them Christmas Stories. They built Santa’s workshop with Lego, decorated stockings and made beautiful paper chains to decorate the classroom. They created polar bears and winter scenes in Art.
We are excited for all the new things we will learn in 2025!
